Forging Horseshoes
with
Charlie Williamson

In Navasota, Texas

Willamson Shoes Do people say, “Oh? You shoe horses?” when you tell them you are a Blacksmith? Then you explain to them you don’t shoe horses. Classic.....

Here’s your chance to say “I don’t shoe horses but I can make a horseshoe”.

Our September ‘HABA’ meeting is going to be at Charlie & Julie Williamson’s place just outside of Navasota.

Charlie started his career is a professional Farrier in 1973. After completing a 10 week Farrier school, Charlie went to work as an apprentice for a well established Farrier, for free. In other words with no pay! Today, he has a large clientele, some of who have flown him to other countries just to care for their horse’s feet.

Charlie is going to show us how to forge a couple of different kinds of horseshoes. A ‘Stamped or Cowboy’ shoe & a ‘Creased’ shoe. In addition, he plans on a ‘Live’ demonstration of how to properly trim and shoe a horse’s hoofs.

What to bring if you want to do something besides watch the demo:

  • Forge (coal / propane)
  • Anvil
  • Fuel
  • Tools
  • 5/16" x 3/4" flat bar if you have it

Some flat bar will be available. Make sure and bring your forge & tools!

PLEASE NOTE: As is the custom at most workshops, sharing tools is common.

Please remember to do a couple of things if you borrow a tool. One, remember from whom you borrowed a tool and make sure you return it by telling that person you are returning it. Two, make sure you look over your tools before you depart to make sure you have only what you came with...nothing missing and nothing extra. It takes more effort to return or find a tool than to double check before leaving the meeting!
