Power Hammer Demo Tim Bailey Tim Bailey will host our May meeting in his shop located within Schill Steel in northwest Houston at 3001 W 11th St, 77008. Tim is an active artist blacksmith creating sculptures and other structural fabrications, often using his inventory of old power hammers in combination with modern techniques. He helps fund these activities with his profession as an AWS Certified Welding Inspector. Tim has recently announced that several of his big tools and anvils may be for sale including the 50 # Little Giant and the HABA Treadle Hammer. Be sure to come early and check the list out.
He has been smithing for over 20 years and has been active within ABANA most of that time. Last year he joined our HABA Board bringing his experience as the blacksmith artist and his perspective as a teacher. He taught sculpture at North Harris County Community College for a number of years. For this demo we will learn how he approaches his projects and the features he likes to include such as "lock up, bites, or other orchestrated happy accidents". He refers to his method as using industrial process and surplus, featuring natural forms available in forged steel. Tim has collected many examples of industrial art as well as tooling to create his own. The shop space he occupies from Schill Steel allows him ample room to put these hammers. The shop is located in the rear of the facillity. We could have a tour of this industrial facillity, and please remember that Minors are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Frank Walters took and enhanced this photo of Tim working the demo piece on his Nazel 2B. Click to enlarge!
One of the power hammers Tim will be working for our demo is a Nazel 2B self contained air driven tool, which has the capacity of a 250 lb steam hammer. He will be demonstrating the application of the hammers listed below, with their different speeds and die forms. Tooling will be discussed as to how it furthers the overall desired effect, whether forging industrial tongs or rolled structural sections. The list of hammers we will discuss and view are:
Here are some photos of the hammers:
