Special Hand Forged Tool Demonstration

Brent Bailey

Brent Bailey of Orland, California will be our featured demonstrator on Saturday June 11 at Robert Killbucks shop in Magnolia. Brent will demonstrate tool making which is only a part of his forging repertoire. His web site includes examples of architectural and decorative ironwork, jewelry, knives and sculpture. The focal point of his demonstration is to show us how to hand forge, heat treat and polish different kinds of tool steel as he forges 10 individual tools.

Brent Bailey and Tools The entire demonstration will be done without the use of a power hammer. Some parts of some demonstration pieces will be rough forged ahead of time so the demonstration can focus on those forging processes which are unique to each tool.

Brent prepared a handout for all attendees which better describes each demonstration item, identifies resources for the tool steel, grinding, polishing and quenching materials he plans to use in his demonstration. The handout also includes a list of tool steels and suggested tool applications, and space for you to take your own notes. This handout will be available to everyone at the demonstration. See link below.

In addition to doing high quality work, Brent's trademark is to finish some of his tools with a high polish.

See www.brentbaileyforge.com for examples of Brent's work.

Please contact Dave Koenig at: tudorforge@sbcglobal.net or 281-855-2869. Please leave a phone message if the line is busy or there is no answer. The purpose of the contact is to get some kind of count on the number of people planning to attend and how many people plan to stay for lunch, with catered BBQ for about $8 each. Please contact Dave before May 16, 2005. Thanks! Brent has a very ambitious demonstration scheduled for June 11. The focal point of his demonstration is to show us how to hand forge, heat treat and polish different kinds of tool steel as he forges 10 individual tools.

PLANNED DEMONSTRATION

Dave Koenig prepared a set of notes (pdf format) for the attendees which you may download and bring with you by clicking Brent Bailey Demo Notes.

Brent will demonstrate how to make the following kinds of tools with the following tool steels:
  1. A German style cross peen hammer, S7 - 2 inch round x 4 inches.
  2. A Swedish style cross peen hammer, 4340 - 1 ¾ inches round x 4 inches.
  3. A repoussé hammer, S7 - 1 inch round x 6 inches.
  4. A double taper center punch, Atlantic 33 - ¾ inch square x 4 ½ inches.
  5. A chisel, H - 13 - ¾ inch round x 7 inches.
  6. A hot cut, Atlantic 33 - 1 ½ x 1 ½ inches square x 4 inches.
  7. A one half inch handled fuller, 4140 - 1 ½ round x 5 inches.
  8. A hammer drift, 4140 - 1 ¼ inches round x 7 inches.
  9. A slitter, Atlantic 33 - 1 x 1 inch square x 6 inches.
  10. A Zimbabwe Hot Cut, 5160 - ½ x 3 x 4 inches.

The entire demonstration will be done without the use of a power hammer. Some parts of some demonstration pieces will be rough forged ahead of time so the demonstration can focus on those forging processes which are unique to each tool.

TOOL STEEL ORDER

A natural follow-up to this demonstration is to get some of the tool steels Brent will demonstrate and make your own tools. Kent Fowler researched and identified a supply of these tool steels and found some pretty good prices. After the demonstration, HABA will place an order if there is enough interest to meet minimum order requirements.

Kent did find a deal on a small supply of Atlantic 33 in the demonstration sizes and it will be available for sale at the demonstration. Sale of this material may be by drawing given the demand and amount available.

What is Atlantic-33? It is a special proprietary alloy known for its quality as a "hot use" tool that likes water quenching. Here are some links to more info (not much out there!):

The high alloy apparently contains these elements:
  • Carbon: .3 - .4
  • Manganese: .35 - .40
  • Chromium: .65 - .85
  • Nickel: .35- .55
  • Moly: .55 - .75
  • Copper: .35 -.55
  • Silicon: .5 - .7
Contact for tool steel, in particular, Atlantic-33:

GRINDING AND POLISHING

Brent was able to spend only a short time away from the anvil and forge to work on the grinding and polishing his work is reknown for. He has taken the items he made during the day back to his shop to finish up the grind and polish so that HABA will have completed tools for auction. Here are some links to sites with info about tools and techniques. Thanks Brent!
