Frank Turley began smithing in 1962 as a farrier's apprentice. He worked with three "hot shoers" and shod show Morgans for five years before turning his attention to ornamental ironwork. He began taking orders for fire tools, fireplace screens, branding irons, and kitchen utensils. He worked with Victor Vera in Santa Fe, Victor as a young man, being Pancho Villa's gunsmith under duress. Victor was making furniture hardware for a local firm. In 1970, Turley opened Turley Forge Blacksmithing School in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He has graduated a large number of working smiths from his short courses, and he is a popular workshop presenter. He is a "guru's helper", where he answers questions on www.anvilfire.com. Click on Guru's Den. Frank Turley will present for HABA Forge Fest a potpourri of toolsmithing (S7 and W1), forge welding, and ornamental elements. Turley is a practitioner of tai chi form and will demonstrate and talk about bringing the tai chi principles of grounding, relaxation, and deep breathing into the workplace. Blacksmiths across Texas, Louisiana and all points from there have an opportunity to gather for the day, work and show their wares during the Show weekend of Round Top in Oldenburg, TX. Five acres of land is being made available to blacksmiths during the famous Round Top Antique Show. The Round Top, TX antique show expanded over the years to include the neighboring towns of Warrenton, Shelby, Oldenburg and a few other places in between. The show occurs in April and October each year. Oldenburg is located about 90 miles northwest of Houston. During the weekend over 1,000 vendors sell and 200,000 buyers enjoy the shows, buy and drive the beautiful countryside. The owner of the property has an interest in smithing and played in the Oldenburg blacksmith shop while growing up. The original site of the Oldenburg shop is just a few stone throws away from the five-acre site. The original Oldenburg shop is now operating again at the George Ranch Historical Park south of Houston. Everyone is invited to come to Oldenburg and demonstrate. Our gracious hosts are Kennie and Susan Hall. There is no cost for the general grounds. A hat is passed to defray the expenses for power, water and porta-jons.
