Copper Bowl Workshop with Dave Koenig at Tudor Forge in Magnolia
This February we feature bowls and vessel making with Dave Koenig at his Tudor Forge shop in Magnolia to support the Empty Bowls Effort. This will be similar to our workshop demo last year on vessel making where the bowls were larger in diameter than the year before. Except......this year we will work with copper plate!
Photos are placed on our FLICKR collection page Bowling in Copper. Please join local artists and crafts people for Houston’s Fifth Annual Empty Bowls Event March 21, 2008. Empty Bowls Houston is a grassroots effort by artists and craftspeople across the country to feed the hungry in their communities. The Houston Empty Bowls Committee, comprising the craft and art community, Houston Food Bank, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Lawndale Art Center, and Whole Foods Market are seeking contributions of handmade bowls and artworks from local artists and craftspeople. HABA needed workstations for the February copper vessel making workshop. To solve that problem of no workstations, Tee Hines was gracious enough to bring his chainsaw to Tudor Forge and make some. There will be a total of 14 pine and oak stumps about three feet long available to those who want to make a vessel at Tudor Forge on the 21st. Richard Boswell also trimed up some nice pine logs that were lined up for the burn pile. A big thanks to Tee and Richard for making the stumps available. And, and additional thanks goes to Ed Malmgren who will provide the cut material for the workshop. Ed included some aluminum along with the copper for the meeting on Saturday. Below are some pix of vessel samples. Working with this 20 gauge will be a new experience for everyone. It was for me (Dave). There is a lot that can be done with this material. Of course, for those who wish to sharpen their skills learned the last couple of years, there is plenty of 12 gauge steel available.
When & Where : Saturday, February 21 : The schedule looks like this for Saturday morning:
Where : Dave Koenig's Tudor Forge in Magnolia, Texas Directions to Tudor Forge From Houston: Take 249 NW from Houston. Travel through the towns of Tomball, Decker Prairie and Pinehurst. At Pinehurst 249 changes to 1774. Stay on 1774. About three miles ahead on 1774 look for a Shell station on the west side of the road. One half mile past the Shell station, turn left or west on Tudor Way. There is a small white realtor office on the corner. You will find the forge about a mile down the road on the left. Or if you are coming from Magnolia: From the intersection of 1488 and 1774 in Magnolia, go south on 1774 about 4 miles. Look for Tudor Way just after the Country Jamboree building. Turn right and follow the signs. If you see the Shell station you went too far. PLEASE NOTE: As is the custom at most workshops, sharing tools is common. Please remember to do a couple of things if you borrow a tool. One, remember from whom you borrowed a tool and make sure you return it by telling that person you are returning it. Two, make sure you look over your tools before you depart to make sure you have only what you came with...nothing missing and nothing extra. It takes more effort to return or find a tool than to double check before leaving the meeting! Last year's meeting page has a lot of useful lynks to pages about bowl making. Here are a few more for your review....
and while we were looking at videos this was found...looks familiar? What to Bring Bring safety glasses with side shields. This is a requirement! Bring your forges and tools. A number of forges will be available. Plan to bring a lunch or eat at a local restaurant. Bring a chair to sit in. You do not have to be a member to attend our meetings! Bring a Guest! Bring your Membership Dues if you want to work at a forge and are not a current Member ! Minors are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
