Refractory Technique with Bill and Clint Jones
The August 19 HABA meeting was hosted by Ed Malmgren at Components Inc at East 610 Loop and McCarty. The featured demonstrators was the team of Bill and Clint Jones of Beaumont. This meeting was your opportunity to learn about refractory from different manufacturers...and the application, installation and repair techniques for various kinds. There is a lot of misinformation out there about refractory and much of that misinformation was clarified at this meeting.Bill and Clint demonstrated refractory mixing and packing techniques for a raku furnace, and a ribbon burner. They also build and showed a new style forge using expanded metal with four inches of blanket and a spray-on 95% reflective rigidizer. (Pink is Good Stuff!) Bill demonstrated reburishment of the HABA Simple Propane Burner forge which was well used by Lawrence Childress. A new insulating firebrick was contour cut to fit the pipe curvature and remove the air gap beneath it, and then the two layers of ceramic fiber insulation was replaced with a single thicker layer.
